SERTO stainless steel union with EC79 certification

An independent testing institute has tested the SERTO compression fitting in accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 79/2009 - also known as EC79. The compression fitting in sizes 6 to 12 mm fulfils the requirements of the regulation for the pressure rating up to 35 MPa.

Hydrogen and fuel cells are crucial sources of energy in the global quest for a net-zero future – a future in which climate-neutral industrial production, heat generation and mobility are the norm. Hydrogen is able to escape even through the smallest openings. Pipelines dedicated to transporting this small-molecule gas must therefore be made from adequate material and feature highly leaktight components.

Regulation (EC) No. 79/2009
Being gastight and leakage-proof are the two key criteria for high-performance unions. SERTO unions have proven themselves in hydrogen systems for many years and can be found in electrolysers, fuel cells or H2 sensors, for example. We have now put them to the test by having the SERTO compression ferrule union checked by an independent testing institute in accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 79/2009, also known as EC79. The 6 to 12 mm compression unions meet the Regulation’s requirements for pressure stages up to 35 MPa (350 bar), as confirmed with a certificate in November 2023.

Demanding tests
EC79 specifies the type approval testing of hydrogen-powered vehicles by setting stringent test constraints for all components carrying hydrogen. For fittings such as tube unions, these include hydrogen compatibility tests, corrosion resistance tests, pressure cycle tests and leak tests. These tests are combined with 25 repeat assemblies.
By being awarded this certification, SERTO’s stainless steel union proves to be fit for use not only with gaseous hydrogen applications up to 350 bar but also very generally in all gas-carrying pipes.
